Er zijn veel boeken over materiaalkunde, maar in Nederland zijn weinig boeken voor diegenen die mee moeten denken over de keuze van materialen, zonder dat zij direct bij de technische uitvoering betrokken zijn. Het gaat dan met name om Industrieel Productontwerpers en Technisch Bedrijfskundigen, die verder van de feitelijke engineering afstaan. Hiervoor is Materiaalkeuze voor ontwerpers ontwikkeld. Het boek richt zich op ontwerpers en minder op constructeurs, en is daardoor minder diepgaand maar toch gebaseerd op dezelfde materiaalkundige fundamenten. Veel hoofdstukken uit de fundamentele materiaalkunde zijn herschreven naar de bijbehorende materiaalkeuzeroutes. Aan de hand van voorbeelden en praktijkgerichte, stapsgewijs opgebouwde vraagstukken leert men een materiaalkundig verantwoorde materiaalkeuze te maken. Materiaalkeuze voor ontwerpers is een lesboek ter ondersteuning van de lessen op het hbo. Het boek is grafisch van aard, omdat de kracht van beeldmateriaal door ontwerpers in sterke Mate onderkend wordt. Het boek is ook communicatiegericht door de illustratieve, heldere wijze waarop de product- en materiaaleigenschappen zijn beschreven. Materiaalkeuze voor ontwerpers staat dicht bij de praktijk van de productontwikkeling. Steeds wordt de relatie tussen materiaalkeuze en de productieproceskeuze gelegd. Met modellen worden de relaties ontwikkeld voor het beschrijven van productgedrag. Van hieruit wordt op logische wijze uitgelegd hoe men het juiste materiaal kan vinden. Om tot een goede materiaalkeuze te komen moet men een goed gevoel ontwikkelen voor materiaalgedrag in producten. Een bruikbare grafische methode hierbij vormen de materiaalkeuzekaarten van M.F. Ashby. Hiermee kan op methodische wijze de juiste materiaalgroep gevonden worden. Dit boek reikt vervolgens wegen aan om binnen de materiaalgroep het beste materiaal te vinden en te benoemen. In architectural education, the study of materials and the study of design are often treated as separate areas of discourse, when in reality the two are utterly intertwined. Eine Übersicht für Architekten, die auch die Bedeutung der Baustoffwahl für die sinnliche Wahrnehmung von Architektur wie Haptik, Geruch, Farbe, Oberflächenstruktur berücksichtigt, gab es bisher nicht. Mit dem Baustoff Atlas wird diese Lücke nun geschlossen. Als ein auf die Interessen von Architekten und Bauingenieuren gleichermassen abgestimmtes Grundlagenwerk wird er alle genannten Betrachtungsebenen vereinen. Dabei werden sowohl grundsätzliche Nachhaltigkeitsfragen wie Lebensdauer, Umweltbelastung und Stoffkreisläufe erörtert als auch Materialinnovationen vorgestellt. Until now, the few existing systematic texts on construction materials have primarily been directed at building engineers. An overview for architects, which also considers the importance of construction materials in the sensory perception of architecture-including tactile qualities, smell, color, and surface structure-has not been available.With the publication of the Construction Materials Manual, all that has changed. As a basic work aimed equally at the questions and perspectives of architects and building engineers, it will bring together all of the above-mentioned viewpoints.
